Risk Factors

Before people develop type 2 diabetes, they almost always have prediabetes – blood glucose levels that are higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Doctors sometimes refer to prediabetes as impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) or impaired fasting glucose (IFG), depending on what test was used when it was detected. This condition puts you at a higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Treatment

The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is a lifestyle change program developed specifically to prevent type 2 diabetes. DPP classes help people with prediabetes make achievable and realistic lifestyle changes and can reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by nearly 60%.

A trained lifestyle coach leads the DPP class as you develop your lifestyle changes through group support.  The program is a year-long program focused on long-term changes and lasting results. During the first 6 months of the program, you will meet about once a week. During the second 6 months you’ll meet once or twice a month.

A year might sound like a long commitment, but learning new habits, gaining new skills and building confidence takes time.
